sE Electronics Announces New V PACKS for Drums

At the Winter NAMM Show in January 2019, sE Electronics introduced the V SERIES for drums, consisting of the V KICK, V BEAT, and V CLAMP. Since their introduction, they have already been seen on stage with artists including Chris Stapleton, In Flames, Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, The Wailers, Big Sean, and many others.

New for Summer 2019, sE has announced special bundles of these mics, called the V PACKS.

The new V PACK ARENA from sE Electronics.

The V PACK case.

The V PACK ARENA is sE’s top of the line drum pack, consisting of one V KICK for bass drum, three V BEATS and V CLAMPS for toms, one V7 X for snare, and a factory-matched stereo pair of sE8 condensers for overheads. All mics and their accessories come securely packaged inside a robust and distinctive sE flight case, with an empty space included to accommodate a hi-hat microphone.

The V PACK ARENA retails for $1199 USD MSRP ($999 USD MAP) and is now shipping worldwide.

The V PACK CLUB is designed for more minimal drum mic requirements, and configuration and pricing may vary from country to country. For more information, sE recommends contacting a local authorized sE distributor or reseller.

Sound On Sound Reviews the sE / Rupert Neve RNT

Sound On Sound magazine has just released their review of our flagship tube microphone, the sE / Rupert Neve RNT.

Though the full review is for their subscribers only (and you can read it here if you’re one of them), we’ve been kindly granted permission to publish a few excerpts from it below:

“…while you don't have to have lots of high-end gear to make a great sounding recording, it just makes your job that bit easier — and the RNT just plain helped me out during its time at my studio, in terms of getting great results quickly.”

“…they'd done quite a big mic shootout before tracking the vocals and…they'd chosen the RNT for lead vocals on the whole album. There's no shortage of good mic options at my studio, but apparently the band especially liked how it helped the vocal cut through their big guitar sounds.”

“I was impressed with not only the clarity and detail captured but also how easy it was to get the vocal to sit nicely in the track quickly.”

“I don't like using the term 'musical' with audio equipment, but for all the singers I recorded with this mic, it framed the voice in a way that just worked in the song.”

A Very Unusual Use of The DM1 DYNAMITE

Though the DM1 DYNAMITE was designed to provide a +28dB boost of discrete Class-A gain for all your passive microphones, that's not the ONLY use for it.

Watch this video to see how Arpad Sayko, FOH Engineer for Chris Stapleton, implements a DM1 DYNAMITE Active Inline Mic Preamp to fix a gain staging problem within his vocal signal path.

During a rehearsal at Clair Brothers for a 2019 Stapleton tour, Arpad noticed that he was getting very low gain when inserting an outboard channel strip (for dynamic EQ) into Chris’ vocal insert path. This caused a “pretty unacceptable” increase in noise floor, and the outboard unit’s threshold was set far too low - and input / output gains set far too high - for proper operation.

Rather than giving up, Chris decided to insert a DM1 Dynamite (“with wonderful packaging, by the way!”) between the console and the channel strip. After some clever thinking and Y-splitter cable arrangement, “I now have a healthier gain structure, I’m in the ‘sweet spot’ of the piece of gear, the noise floor is squashed - and as a result, I get a better situation, I’m not maxing out my gain…results have been good!”

sE On Tour with Alejandro Escovedo

Over the last few years sE’s been showing up on more and more stages worldwide, and we were just sent some photos from a recent Alejandro Escovedo show in Austin, TX - check them out!

He’s been using the V7 on vocals, the VR2 ribbon on electric guitar, the V KICK on floor tom, and the sE4400a Stereo Pair for drum OHs.

(Big thanks to Josh Thomas for the photos.)
